I think, maybe, shame and hurt are entwined like the fibers that make up a strand of yarn. You can tear them apart, but then you don't have yarn, the thing from which you can knit something to keep warm. Seeing it that way, though--that the yarn is not one thing, but a a combination of things--that brings a kind of clarity that feels like an untangling.
